Tanker Driver Dies In Fiery Crash

Tanker Overturned Sunday Night Near Loveland

POSTED: 7:41 am MDT September 12, 2011
UPDATED: 2:51 pm MDT September 15, 2011

The driver of a tanker truck died after his truck overturned and caught on fire Sunday night.

The driver, Gary Agee, 52, of Greeley, was going northbound on Interstate 25 at 9 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol said Agee tried to exit onto U.S. 34 eastbound, but he was going too fast and the truck overturned.

Investigators said Agee wasn't necessarily speeding. However, liquid cargo moves differently than dry cargo, said Trooper Nate Reid.

Reid said the same truck with solid cargo could have made the turn.

Firefighters from Loveland, Poudre, Berthoud, Windsor, and Johnstown fire districts fought the fire.

The ramp from I-25 to eastbound U.S. 34 near Loveland was closed for more than 12 hours. The exit ramp reopened at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
