BIRTHPLACE: Auburn, CA

HOMETOWN: Ignacio, Colo.

EDUCATION: Bachelor of arts degree from San Jose State University in 1957, attended Meiji University in Tokyo 1960-64.

BACKGROUND: Nighthorse Campbell's father was a Cheyenne Indian. He is the only American Indian in the Senate.

EXPERIENCE: Campbell has worked as a rancher, jewelry designer, horse trainer and teacher. He served in the Air Force in Korea, 1951-53 and was captain of the U.S. Olympic Judo Team in 1964. He served in the Colorado state House, 1983-87, and the U.S. House, 1987-92. He was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1992. He became a Republican in March 1995 and won re-election in 1998.
