ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. -- An employee at the Elbert County Department of Motor Vehicles office is accused of taking registration money from vehicle owners, then pocketing the money.Jamie Upchurch, 34, is charged with 117 counts of embezzlement of public property, 117 counts of official misconduct and one count of theft of $20,000 or more.Upchurch was putting a vehicle's information into the computer system, printing out a registration, giving the owner his or her sticker and paperwork, then canceling the registration so it would not go through the system, according to Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch.
She only did this to people who were paying cash, Couch said.Elbert County has an insurance policy to cover the problem and pay for the victims to get their vehicle registrations, Couch told 7NEWS.
