Lightning Strikes Several Homes

Homeowners Smell Smoke, Get Help To Save Homes

Steve Hunter had no idea that a lightning bolt had set his south Denver home on fire until he smelled the smoke five minutes later.

"I felt the shock wave, but that could have just been my nerves causing me to jump," said Hunter.

He wasn't alone.

Denver Fire Asst. Chief David Frank said crews were swamped with calls related to the lightning storm.

"Listening to the radio on the way over, I heard multiple companies going and checking lightening strikes, stuck elevators and private fire alarms," said Frank.

In Morrison, Lightning hit Kelly Beninga's home, and the fire started smoldering above the laundry room.

"I heard a boom and saw a flash," he said.

He also smelled smoke and called 911 in time to save his house, but not his dinner plans. "I guess we'll go out to eat. It's a good excuse: no power, house smells like smoke."

Hunter said he just got a new roof to help sell his home.

"A Really good roof, too," he said. "We thought we'd have a fire sale. We've already joked about the fire sale."

Now, though, he joked that he feels like something is telling him to take his home off the market.

"It's just like, 'Now what are you going to do?' The heavens have spoken."
