Police Kill Pit Bull During Domestic Disturbance Call

Dog Charges Officers Despite Efforts To Subdue It

POSTED: 9:01 am MST February 9, 2004

Westminster police shot and killed a pit bull Friday night after they answered a domestic disturbance call.

Police said a woman in the 2900 block of West 116th Place said she had been attacked by her boyfriend and his pit pull.

After officers arrested Daniel Brent Smithson Jr., 29, they attempted to subdue the pit bull and take him to the animal shelter. Officers said the dog attempted to bite them, despite their efforts to subdue the dog using a long catchpole.

Officers said they used pepper spray and Taser guns in an effort to subdue the dog, which continued to charge the officers. The pit bull was shot by one officer and continued charging, police said. The dog was shot repeatedly in order to subdue it.

The woman was treated for bite barks to her face. Police charged Smithson with second-degree assault and unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.

Police said a 4-year-old living in the apartment was present at the time but not injured.
