Former Colorado Running Back Commits Suicide

POSTED: 11:57 am MST February 6, 2004
UPDATED: 12:05 pm MST February 6, 2004

A memorial service was held Friday for a former University of Colorado running back who committed suicide Monday.

The body of Bryan Turner, 21, was found Monday at his home in Lafayette. Police said he had hanged himself.

"He loved and played high school and college football, and riding his motorcycle," his family said in a statement about his death.

Colorado athletics spokesman Dave Plati said Turner was a walk-on running back in 2001, but never played in a game.

Turner quit the team after that season and returned for about a month last year before leaving the team for good. He was a graduate of Fairview High School.

University spokeswoman Pauline Hale says officials have no knowledge that the suicide has anything to do with a sex scandal at CU.

The football program is reeling from allegations that it used sex and alcohol to lure recruits.
