Shooting On I-25 Sends Woman, Baby To Hospital

Police Unclear To What Sparked Shooting

UPDATED: 9:48 am MST January 24, 2004

Police are investigating a shooting on Interstate 25 Friday night that sent a woman and a baby to the hospital.

Northglenn police are trying to piece together what led up to the freeway shooting while they search for those responsible.

The woman told officers that around 9 p.m. she heard a pop while she was turning onto southbound I-25 from 104th Avenue. She kept on driving but a short time later several other passengers heard more pops. The driver pulled over along I-25 near 48th Avenue and discovered that her silver Honda Civic hatchback was bullet-riddled. Her back window was shattered but intact and there were a couple of bullet holes in the driver's window.

A woman was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and the infant was taken to Children's Hospital. The conditions and identities of the woman and infant were not released. Their car had a Wyoming license plate.

Stretches of southbound I-25 from 104th to Interstate 70 were closed for several hours Friday night while police from Denver, Thornton and Northglenn investigated the shooting and combed the highway for clues and shell casings.

It's unclear whether this was a drive-by type of shooting or a sniper. There were three to five people inside the car, police said.

Police said the woman and her family were eating at a restaurant and stopped at a gas station on 104th Avenue just before the shooting. The manager of the restaurant told 7NEWS that nothing out of the ordinary occurred when they were there.
