Littleton police are still questioning a man about the murder of a 46-year-old woman over the weekend.

Rhonda Holland

Rhonda Holland's parents found her laying in a pool of blood Sunday afternoon in the basement of their store -- Season's Givings Gift Shoppe on the 5700 block of Rapp Street in Old Littleton.

Police say Holland's throat had been slashed.

According to the Arapahoe County coroner, the murder took place Saturday afternoon, at least 17 hours before her body was found.

The business is generally open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, but is usually closed on Sundays, said Holland's parents, David and Hazel Brewer. However, it appeared that the store was open for business on Sunday, leading investigators to believe that it may have never been closed Saturday evening.

A few hours after police began investigating the death, officers discovered Holland's missing blue Dodge Shadow parked nearby, at the Essex House Motel.

Detectives went door to door, questioning the motel's guests until they spoke with one man, who had appeared "suspicious," police said. Littleton police are calling the man a "person of interest," and have not released his name.

"We have no motive at all at this point, other than robbery, possibly robbery," said Sean Dugan with Littleton police.

Officers are searching the man's motel room, Holland's car, and her home to gather more clues that could shed light on what happened. A dumpster from the motel was also taken into evidence.

Police do not know if any money was taken from the shop and say most of the items inside the store were left undisturbed.

The man has not been charged but he is still in police custody on an unrelated charge.

Friends describe Holland as a fun woman, but a hard worker, saying she was always at the store.

Nearby workers and residents told 7NEWS that they are still uneasy, knowing that the suspect has not been caught.

"It makes you feel sick inside that one human being would do that to another human being," said Kim Borek, who lives across the street. "It is unnerving when it happens so close to home."

Joe Kim, owner of the Shining Star Cafe, said his wife didn't even want to open the restaurant Monday morning for fear of what could happen.

Other women who work in nearby shops say they noticed a man lurking around the area. Some question if that person thought Holland was the easiest target. Several store managers told 7NEWS they plan on changing some of their store policies so everyone feels safe.

Anyone with information pertaining to the crime is being asked to call Littleton police at (303) 795-3896.
