A third woman has filed a civil suit against the University of Colorado, saying she was raped at an off-campus party for football recruits and that the atmosphere of sexual harassment in the school's athletic department contributed to it.
Monique Elyse Gillaspie, was attending CU on a full soccer scholarship, said that after she reported the assault to Boulder police, she was threatened by football players and retaliated against by the athletic department. According to her suit, her scholarship was revoked without an academic hearing.
Gillaspie is the third woman to claim she was raped at the Dec. 7, 2001, party. Lisa Simpson and Anne Gilmore also sued the university, for fostering what they called an environment of sexual harassment. The lawsuit filed by Gillaspie's attorneys late Wednesday alleges a football player at the party "ordered her to kiss and hug one of the recruits."She said a player told her later that "a recruit had sex with (another) woman while the others watched, and football players obtained oral sex from (the) woman."According to Gillaspie, a CU football player told her the purpose of the party was for the recruits to have sex.No charges were ever filed in the case. The Boulder District Attorney's Office said it would investigate the sexual assault claims in Gillaspie's suit.
