POSTED: 8:23 am MST December 4, 2003

A suspected john confronted by Aurora police during an prostitution sting was shot and killed by a uniformed officer after he displayed aggressive behavior toward an unarmed decoy officer, police said Thursday.

The dead man was identified as Jamaal Allan Bonner, 21.

The shooting happened on the second floor of the Top Star Motel on the 10000 block of East Colfax around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday where police were conducting an undercover vice operation, they said.

According to police, Bonner approached the female decoy police officer on the street nearby and negotiated with the woman to exchange crack cocaine for a sex act.

Under the police plan, female officers dressed as prostitutes would take men to the motel room and uniformed officers would arrest them.

Once in the motel room, the undercover officer signaled for uniformed officers to arrest the suspect, and then took cover.

Police said officers ordered Bonner to place his hands in the air, but said he kept them in the area of his waistband and pockets and then started an aggressive move toward the unarmed female undercover officer who was nearby. At that point Bonner was shot with a Taser gun by one officer and then a second officer shot Bonner in the upper body with his service revolver.

Bonner was not armed, according to police. They said he has an extensive criminal history for offenses involving assault on a police officer, assaults, carrying a concealed weapon, additional weapons charges, aggravated robbery, narcotics, resisting arrest and theft. Additionally, there were two outstanding warrants for Bonner, one from the U.S. Marshall’s Office and the other from Denver.

Ernest Casimier, the manager of the Top Star Motel, said the investigation had been going on for a few hours when the shooting happened.

"I heard a low popping sound," he said.

Michael Riggins, 32, Casimier's nephew, said he saw a black man in his 20s walk across the parking lot with an undercover female officer.

"The only thing I noticed about him was he had his hand in his pocket the whole time, even when he went up the stairs," he said. "It was strange."

Casimier said another nephew was in the parking lot at the time and said he heard officers ordering someone to take his hands out of his pockets and get down just before the shots.

Officers began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation Bonner after he was shot but he was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave with pay, until the investigation is complete, which is typical in cases like this, 7NEWS reported. It is not known if that officer fired more than one shot.

The police officers involved in the sting were taken to police headquarters Wednesday night and interrogated by investigators.

The area where the shooting occurred is known to have problems with prostitution. Casimier said that the police perform the sting at his motel periodically, but this is the first time that anyone has been shot.
