Report: Kobe's Accuser Had Checked Into Treatment Center

Details Of Treatment Not Released

POSTED: 10:52 am MST November 26, 2003

The Eagle, Colo., woman who accused NBA basketball star Kobe Bryant of rape checked into a medical treatment center to help her escape relentless media and threats, the Vail Daily reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said that tabloid reports that the 19-year-old was suffering from drug problems were overstated, according to Vail Daily anonymous sources.

The decision to check the woman into a medical treatment center was made after death threats and an unrelenting pursuit by tabloid newspapers and other media, the newspaper reported.

The report did not say where or when she checked into the center and didn't say what treatment was sought for her. An attorney for the alleged victim said he could not comment.

Former Denver District Attorney Norm Early told Vail Daily that it doesn't make any difference where the alleged victim has been treated, especially if the treatment is a result of her alleged sexual assault by Bryant.

Under Colorado law, Early told the newspaper, Bryant's defense attorneys would be prevented from seeing anything associated with the alleged victim's medical records.

Bryant, 25, faces four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation if convicted of felony sexual assault. He is accused of raping a 19-year-old worker at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera where he stayed June 30.

Bryant has said the two had consensual sex. No trial date has been set and a motions hearing was scheduled for Dec. 19.
