A 20-year-old injured climber is safe after a 13½-hour rescue marathon in Rocky Mountain National Park wrapped up just before midnight Saturday.

Park spokesman Larry Frederick said it took a team of 22 people to rescue Rebecca Stubbs from an area just east of Longs Peak. Stubbs, a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is from Massachusetts.

She was part of a party of five climbers who started from the Longs Peak Trailhead around 4 a.m. Saturday, hoping to summit Mount Meeker. Shortly before 8 a.m., the group put on their crampons to start up the icy slope in the Chasm Lake area. During the ascent, Stubbs slipped and fell about 200 feet, suffering multiple injuries, Frederick said.

The group of experienced backcountry travelers used a SPOT GPS messenger device to contact rescue personnel. Rangers reached Stubbs around noon Saturday.

Emergency personnel from multiple agencies performed a difficult rescue that involved raising Stubbs 200 feet toward Chasm Junction. Officials said Stubbs remained alert and stable throughout the ordeal.

Crews finally reached the Longs Peak Trailhead with Stubbs around 11:30 p.m. She was then transported to Estes Park Medical Center.
