DENVER -- A Craigslist ad offering to sell frozen mother's milk is being called "very dangerous" by officials with the Mother's Milk Bank at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL.

"I am a very healthy mom (never done drugs, smoked, or even drank alcohol) of three kids," the ad begins.

The poster said she is producing more milk than needed and has more than 200 ounces of milk in deep freeze.

She said she would like to sell it, but is willing to work something out.

In December, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to parents about the risk of disease, including HIV, as well as contamination from bacteria, drugs or chemicals in breast milk from unscreened donors.

Officials at the Mother's Milk Bank at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL said it's their stance to discourage unscreened donations.

"There is a risk to the donor and recipient because the screening can not be done by a lay person," said Laraine Lockhart-Bormany with the Mother's Milk Bank. "We get medical releases from our donor's doctors, we test the donor's blood, and we pasteurize the milk to kill viruses and bacteria."

But mothers such as Trina Landy told 7NEWS are saying they have no other choice but to go online.

She had always planned to breastfeed her now 6-month-old daughter, Shelby. "But out of nowhere one day, I just stopped producing," she said.

When the Littleton mother discovered Shelby is allergic to formula, she went online to find someone selling mother's milk.

"In all honesty, it's liquid gold," said Landy. "I replied to an ad, and the lady said she could help me out as along as I supplied her with storage bags."

Landy said she can't afford the $3.50/ounce the milk bank charges, so she's counting on the milk of human kindness.

"You've got to trust these women. You put your baby's life in their hands, basically," said Landy. "I'm sorry if you get upset with me, but I'm doing what I think is best for my child."
