Wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, with his hands cuffed in front of him, accused Deer Creek Middle School shooter Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood did not say a word when he learned his trial would begin in March.

Eastwood, 32, is charged with attempted murder and other counts in the Feb. 23 shooting at Deer Creek Middle School in Jefferson County outside Denver. This summer, he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Eastwood's been held at the Colorado Institute for Mental Health in Pueblo, where he had undergone a mental health evaluation

The trial won't begin until more than a year after the shooting. A Jefferson County judge set the trial for March 8. Prosecutors expect the trial to last three weeks.

On Monday, the prosecution tried to get the judge to order a second evaluation of Eastwood. They argued that his original evaluation wasn't videotaped, and wanted a new evaluation done that would be recorded. The judge decided not to order a new evaluation, but said he could still change his mind in the next three weeks.

The judge told both sides that he would release information from a 2005 University of Colorado mental health study in which Eastwood participated. He said that after the prosecution reviewed that information, they could submit new reasons to order another evaluation, which he would then consider. Until then, Eastwood will remain in Pueblo, but could be transferred to the Jefferson County jail if no evaluation is ordered.

On Feb. 23, Eastwood shot two students outside of Deer Creek Middle School, then was tackled by a teacher and arrested. He had four live rounds of ammunition for a hunting rifle when deputies searched him, but he told authorities that he left his home with a box of ammunition and purchased another on his way to the school, according to an arrest affidavit released in March.

Eastwood told investigators he approached a group of students in front of the school, asked them if they liked going to Deer Creek and then raised his father's hunting rifle and fired at a girl, the affidavit says.

He said he didn't know if the girl was hit because she turned and ran. Eastwood said he then fired at a boy who had his back turned, the affidavit says.

The wounded students were eighth-graders Reagan Weber and Matt Thieu.
