A school bus carrying 16 students collided with a car in Fort Collins Monday morning, turning the car into a tangled mess and sending the driver and several students to the hospital.

The accident happened around 8:25 a.m. on Lemay Avenue near Ticonderoga Drive. Witnesses said the 16-year-old driver in the car was going too fast and lost control on a curve. The car slid into the path of the bus, broadsiding it.

"I could hear them screaming from my house, which was heartbreaking," said Cindy Hosman, a local resident. "You see things like this really hits home. I hope they use this for drivers education and show them what can happen."

The collision forced the Honda Civic into a front yard. The teenager in the car had to be removed from the mangled wreck with the jaws of Life. He was rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital. His condition wasn't released and his identity is not being disclosed because he is a juvenile.

Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the accident.

Several students onboard the bus and the bus driver, Shirley Richards, 50, of Fort Collins, were also taken to the hospital to be treated and released.

Eleven of the students had no health concerns, and five had very minor injuries, according to hospital staff.

The bus was headed to Shepardson Elementary School.

The Poudre School District said it notified parents quickly about the incident, and students were released from the hospital in the custody of their parents.

Fort Collins police are continuing to investigate. The area where the accident occurred is known for being a spot for accidents, Fort Collins residents said.
