DENVER -- Denver Health Medical Center officials say a 12-year Denver police veteran who suffered two grazing stomach
wounds Friday was discharged from the hospital after an incident Friday evening that left two people dead.
The incident happened less than 25 yards from the Denver Police Gang Unit headquarters near 22nd and Colorado Boulevard around 5:45 p.m.
According to police, a man and woman were arguing in a Ford Expedition when they pulled the vehicle over at a police substation. Police said the couple soon got out of the car and the woman began to chase the man. This attracted the attention of the police officers inside, who were just getting off work and were about to go home.
The man yelled at officers that the woman had a gun.
The woman shot the man driving the sport utility vehicle and then pointed the weapon at an officer, police said. The officer asked her to drop the weapon. She fired several shots and several other officers opened fire, police said.
As many as four police officers may have been involved in the shooting.
Both the man and the woman, who have not been identified, were pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center. The unidentified officer was not seriously wounded, and walked to a waiting ambulance, clutching his stomach, which was grazed by two bullets, 7NEWS reported.
The injured officer works at the Denver Police Gang Unit.
After the shooting, the area was cordoned off by numerous Denver police cars. Officers combed the area and placed yellow evidence markers at the scene, indicating dozens of shell casings. Nearby cars were riddled with bullets.
It is not known if the couple knew that the building where they parked was a Denver police substation.
