ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A New Mexico religious watchdog group says it will send a copy of the Quran to the Afghan National Army for every one that may be destroyed by the pastor of a small Florida church. Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said Wednesday his group would deliver copies of the Quran to U.S. Gen. David Petraeus for distribution. Petraeus has condemned plans by Terry Jones, leader of a Gainesville church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy, to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.
"The people who are doing this are treasonous for putting our soldiers directly in the cross hairs," said Weinstein, whose foundation is based in Albuquerque.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation website says it is "dedicated to ensuring that all members of the United States Armed Forces fully receive the Constitutional guarantees of religious freedom to which they and all Americans are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.""MRFF adheres strongly to the principle that religious faith is a deeply personal matter, and that no American has the right to question another American’s beliefs as long as they do not unwontedly intrude on the public space or the privacy or safety of another individual," the website says.
