COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A new school opening next week in Colorado Springs will offer foreign language classes to kids ages 1 to 10.Emily Hammond is the owner and director of Yak Academy, near Academy and Dublin boulevards in Colorado Springs, a for-profit business that will offer classes in Spanish, Mandarin and French, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette. “Your brain is wired to acquire language at that age,” Hammond said.
The languages won’t be taught with books and repetitive exercises, Hammond told the newspaper. For younger kids, learning is 100 percent play-based, with words and concepts taught with games, songs, movement, arts and crafts, even snack time.Older students will learn by focusing on longer projects, competitions, and presentation to parents. Classes are after-school and on Saturdays.Read more about Yak Academy in the Colorado Springs Gazette.
