Craigslist Changes Could Reduce Sex Crimes, Police Say

Adult Services Eliminated From Popular Website

UPDATED: 10:00 am MDT September 6, 2010

Craigslist has now removed the adult services section from its website. Police hope the move helps curb sex crimes in the Denver area.

If you log on to Craigslist, you'll see the word "censored" over the section that until recently advertised adult services. The change comes after pressure from several states amid accusations that it became a marketplace for prostitution.

But will this change truly make a difference in reducing prostitution and human trafficking?

“I think it remains to be seen," said Amanda Finger, executive director of the Laboratory To Combat Human Trafficking.

“Human trafficking is when people forcibly sell another person for their own profit. Craigslist has become this open venue which you cannot understand who may not be willingly posting their services or seeking their services," said Finger.

Experts say human trafficking is a concern in Denver, suggesting its location near major interstates make the region vulnerable to such crime.

While the Colorado Attorney General's Office applauds the move, it was not part of the most recent effort to restrict the website.
