Police: Fans Behaved During Rocky Mountain Showdown

Denver Police Make 91 Alcohol Arrests

UPDATED: 9:08 pm MDT September 4, 2010

Most of the action at the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Saturday happened on the football field and not in the stands.

Matt Murray, spokesman for Denver police, said all in all, the crowd was well behaved as the University of Colorado Buffalos defeated Colorado State University Rams 24-3 at Invesco Field.

Police made 91 alcohol-related arrests at or outside the stadium but Murray said there were no "significant law enforcement issues." Of the arrests, 80 were taken into custody.

Police also took 44 fans to detox and there were 21 ejections from the stadium, Murray said. One of the arrests was a DUI.

Murray said that the police department has an agreement with both universities to share the identities of those arrested with the schools. The administrations of the schools can decide whether to take further punitive action against students.

The Rocky Mountain Showdown is an in-state college football rivalry game that is noted for sometimes resulting in boorish behavior and one riot During the 1999 game at old Mile High Stadium, police arrested dozens of fans and riot police fired tear gas into a crowd that spilled onto the football field after CSU's victory.
