LONE TREE, Colo. -- A homeless man convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in the parking lot of the Lone Tree library was sentenced Friday to more than three centuries in prison.Scott James Sylvia, 27, was sentenced to 336 years to life for the sexual assault that occurred on July 7, 2008."The crimes that were committed against the victim were almost unimaginable," Judge Paul King said during sentencing. "The crime that you committed on the victim was brutal. I cannot imagine the horror she must have felt when you sexually assaulted her, Mr. Sylvia."
Sylvia was found guilty of kidnapping, sexual assault, aggravated robbery, retaliation against a witness or victim, two counts of second degree assault, and first degree criminal trespass on June 9.The victim told police she was sitting in her car in the parking lot between the Lone Tree Library and Cook Creek Pool when she was attacked by a man with "noticeable body odor."DNA evidence submitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation provided a DNA match to a profile from the convicted offender index.Sylvia was arrested five days later by Denver police in connection with an unrelated crime, but then was identified by the victim, surveillance video and DNA.Sylvia pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges but the jury found that the prosecution proved his guilt and his sanity beyond a reasonable doubt.Sylvia has a criminal history and is a convicted sex offender.
