CANON CITY, Colo. -- It's happy trails for Buckskin Joe, the replica Old West town in Colorado that served as a setting as for Westerns like "True Grit" and "Cat Ballou." Owner Greg Tabuteau said Friday he has sold the tourist attraction near Canon City, along with the neighboring Royal Gorge Scenic Railroad. He said the new owner plans to dismantle it and move it elsewhere in Colorado. He won't disclose who that is and isn't certain whether Buckskin Joe will remain open to the public or just be used as a movie set in its new location.
The town will remain open through Sept. 12, as first reported by the Pueblo Chieftain. Tabuteau said he's selling partly because the summer season is shorter with school starting earlier. He also said he's ready to take a vacation himself.Buckskin Joe was created from old buildings at the Original Buckskin Joe, near Alma, in Park County. Each of the buildings was meticulously taken apart and marked piece by piece and reassembled at the location near Royal Gorge in 1958.Lee Marvin won an Oscar for his performance in dual roles as Kid Shelleen and Tim Strawn in "Cat Ballou." The role was first offered to Kirk Douglas, but he turned it down.A 1976 movie filmed at Buckskin Joe was "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox," starring Goldie Hawn and George Segal. Other parts of the movie were filmed in Central City, Colo.
