Police: 'Significant' Home Drug Lab Raided

Chemicals More Dangerous Than What's Needed For Meth Lab Found

Chemicals more dangerous than what are needed to make methamphetamine were found in what the Boulder County drug task force called a "significant meth lab" in an Erie neighborhood.

Drug task force Cmdr. Tom Sloan told 7NEWS that there have been suspicions about the home for years, but not enough evidence to build a case.

Sloan told 7NEWS that on Thursday night another investigative agency received a tip that allowed investigators to move on the house.

Officers evacuated the home Thursday night and locked it up. Friday, the drug task force came back with hazardous-materials crews and firefighters to remove the chemicals and clean out the home on Bonanza Drive in the Grandview subdivision. The Mountain View Fire Department had firefighters at the scene to help with decontamination.

Three people were in the home when officers arrived Thursday. Two were taken into custody on outstanding charges, Sloan said. He said more charges are expected.

Sloan called the lab "significant." He said the lab was in portions of the house including the garage, a bedroom and the basement.

He told 7NEWS that some of the more dangerous chemicals taken from the home weren't even needed for making meth.

A viewer photo from the neighborhood showed officers setting up at least three tables and two large tents. Investigators in protective suits brought the chemicals out of the house and staged them at the end of the driveway. Other investigators could be seen taking an inventory of what was found and doing some tests on the chemicals.

"It kind of worries me about the kind of chemicals that were actually in the house that they have to get that dressed up," said neighbor Jacoby Swenson.

"We had, yesterday, undercover detectives in here watching out the window, watching the house across the street," said neighbor Sharon Harmon from her upstairs bedroom.

Harmon said her family had suspected something because of what she considered strange activity at the home.

"Recently we had contacted the police and said, 'Somebody needs to watch this house. We think something's going on,'" said Harmon. "We've been for the last year watching activity over there and now it looks like they've finally got the people out of our neighborhood."

"My husband came out in the driveway to get something out of his car and an undercover officer came up with a badge and said, 'Please go inside, sir,'" said neighbor Tina Albert. "We just moved in last week."

It has been a long week for the drug task force officers, many who also raided a large marijuana growing operation in Boulder County.

Officers said the first grow operation discovered last week had approximately 3,500 plants. The second operation discovered this week a half mile away was even larger, according to the drug task force.
