A teenage girl and her father are facing charges after the girl brought a loaded gun through airport security, according to the Denver District Attorney's office.

Prosecutors said TSA officials discovered a .22 caliber handgun in the girl's purse Monday at a Denver International Airport security checkpoint.

James Mueller, 44, gave the handgun to his daughter for self-protection and she forgot the loaded gun was in the bag, according to a news release.

Mueller is charged with unlawfully providing or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Mueller was released on $10,000 bond.

The juvenile was charged with possession of a handgun.
