POWELL, Wyo. -- Three residents of a rural Wyoming home where 157 cats were seized last week have been charged with a combined 35 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. The Powell Tribune reported that 17 of the cats were in ill health, including fevers, thinness, scabs, sores, ringworm and tumors.Clifton Taylor, 79, and his wife, Maurielena “Mimi” Nesbit, 63, each face 17 counts of cruelty. Nesbit's twin sister Michelle, has been charged with one count of cruelty
The three residents are scheduled to appear in circuit court in Powell on Friday. In court papers filed in the case, police say much of the home was caked with what appeared to be cat feces and cat fur.The cats were rescued from "deplorable living conditions" and many were emaciated and suffering from eye and respiratory infections, ear mites, and tumors, the Denver Dumb Friends League said."It was filthy. There was feces and urine everywhere," said Humane Society of the United States staffer Rowdy Shaw. "The ammonia (smell) was so bad. I mean, I had to actually step out of the house for a few minutes to get a breath of fresh air." Most of the seized cats have been taken elsewhere for adopting out, with 101 of them being taken to shelters in Cheyenne, Denver and Fort Collins, Colo. Some of the cats were euthanized.About a dozen of the 61 cats the Dumb Friends League received on Sunday are available for adoption at the Quebec Street shelter. Adoption fees were waived for these cats, as well as all other kittens and cats at both of Dumb Friends shelters, though Sept. 5.
