DA: Curb Painting Is A Scam

Flyer Urges Residents To Pay For House Numbers On Curbs

POSTED: 2:57 pm MDT September 2, 2010

You know those offers to repaint your home address on the curb, so that could help officers find your home more quickly? It's a scam, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Mitch Morrissey said a flyer showing up Denver neighborhoods says reflective addresses are being painted on curbs and the addresses can't be painted without the homeowner's permission. The flyer also states the cost of the "service' is $20.

"Contrary to popular belief and claims made in the flyer, emergency responders, including the fire department and paramedics, do not rely on painted addresses on curbs to locate or identify residences during emergencies," Morrissey said. "Home address numbers on curbs are simply not reliable as they are often obscured by bushes, parked cars, snow piles and other debris."

Emergency responders will look for home address numbers located somewhere on the home itself instead, the district attorney said.

Curbs are considered a public right of way and any painting or other demarcation of curbs requires a permit in Denver, he said.

What should you do? Decline offers to have your house address painted on the curb.

"Rather than spending money on a service whose claim is not supported by emergency service providers and is not legal without a permit, Denver residents should takes steps to ensure that existing address numbers on their houses are clearly visible from the street," Morrissey said.
