3 Years For Man Who Stole From Dead Airman
Second Suspect Still Awaiting Trial

DENVER -- One of two men accused of stealing dog tags and other belongings from an airman killed in Afghanistan pleaded guilty in El Paso County Wednesday and was sentenced to three years in prison.Denard O'Neal Thompson, 30, pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal trespass, reported the Colorado Springs Gazette.Thompson was arrested by El Paso sheriff's deputies following the Feb. 9 theft from a rental car parked outside a Golden Corral in Colorado Springs.
The car had been rented by Tiffany Smith, who was attending a memorial service for her late husband, Bradley R. Smith. Smith, an airman attached to Fort Carson's 4th Brigade Combat Team, was killed in action on Jan. 3.Among the items stolen were Bradley Smith's dog tags, two laptop computers, a digital camera and a wrist watch. None of the items were recovered, deputies said.Thompson was on probation at the time of the arrest. His three-year prison sentence will run at the same time as the three years he still has to serve for an earlier conviction.Dwain Boyd was also arrested in connection with the theft. His trial is scheduled to start Dec. 6.
