SALIDA, Colo. -- Authorities are slowing the flow of the Arkansas River in an attempt to recover the body of a missing rafting guide.Kimberly Appelson, 23, of Breckenridge was thrown from a boat near a rapid at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area on July 11. Dogs later picked up her scent but the water was too high to look for her there. The plan is to lower the river to its absolute minimum flow so workers can get ideas on where the body could be trapped, said Robert White, park manager of the Arkansas Headwater Recreation Area.
The body could be caught in a slot in rocks or caught in debris or caught in a cave under a rock, so less river flow means that cameras and poles can get into areas they have not been able to access, he said.Rescuers will focus on the Frog Rock Rapid, which is about 2 miles north of Buena Vista on the Arkansas River. This is where the dogs have picked up Appelson's scent as recently as Tuesday, White said. The flow of the river was cut at 5 a.m. at Twin Lakes, Another cut at Twin Lakes as well as Clear Creek occurred at 5:30 a.m.The state parks department is warning rafters that Wednesday's recovery mission will affect water flows on the upper part of the river, above Salida, and to check conditions before putting boats in. The Browns Canyon area could be affected by early afternoon.Users in the lower river corridor below Salida may also see lower flows on Thursday.Six people have died in the area since 1990.
