Tornado Destroys Barn in Morgan County

Barn Had Just Been Rebuilt After Spring Storm

The Brost family of Brush, Colo., spent the day picking up the scattered remains of their brand new barn.

"It had a roof and a back, had side walls. It was a really nice shed," said Keith Brost, owner of the horse ranch.

Shattered boards and twisted tin littered the ranch after a tornado touched down on Monday, just a few hundred feet from their home.

"And then I just seen that thing just blow, just like a bomb," Brost said. "All of a sudden, it was just gone. You could see stuff going right up in the air."

Believe it or not, it's the second time this year a barn was blown down at this same spot.

"Well, we had a really bad wind storm earlier this year, so we just got done rebuilding it," said Isaac Brost.

The new barn was completed just two days before the tornado blew it into pieces.

"We totally redid it with metal pipes and cement and welded everything," Keith Brost said.

Still, it was no match for the twister, and sadly neither was one of their prized quarter horses. One of the six horses in the barn suffered a broken leg and torn tendon after being thrown about 100 yards by the tornado. The horse was later euthanized.

And as the family continued cleaning up the debris, the question remained as to whether they would rebuild the barn for the second time.

"We don't know," Keith Brost said laughing. "I've seen it blow apart twice this year already, and the year ain't over, so I don't know if I want to."
