Handful Of Records In Kobe Bryant Case Released

No New Information, Bombshell Found In Unsealed Documents

Authorities looking to arrest Kobe Bryant on a sexual assault charge also wanted to charge him with false imprisonment, according to a copy of the arrest warrant unsealed Wednesday.

A handful of documents in the case against the NBA superstar were released to the public by an Eagle County judge. They contain few details or new information about the facts of the case, but provide a glimpse of how authorities put together their case. (To look at the documents yourself, click here.)

Bryant, 25, is charged with raping a 19-year-old employee at an exclusive Colorado resort where he was a guest June 30. Bryant has said the two had consensual sex. At an Oct. 9 preliminary hearing, prosecutors will have to present enough information to show that they have enough evidence to move the case to trial. The burden of proof is low, but much more information about what occurred on that night is expected to be uncovered during the preliminary hearing, 7NEWS reported.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard is charged with a single count of felony sexual assault.

However, the July 3 arrest warrant said there was "probable cause" Bryant was also guilty of false imprisonment, a misdemeanor. Authorities in the case have not said what allegedly happened in Bryant's hotel suite.

Legal experts said that the reason why the false imprisonment charge was dropped later on was probably because the prosecution didn't want to add a second-degree misdemeanor to the case, which would allow an undecided jury to take the easy way out and only convict Bryant on a misdemeanor, if they were unsure of his guilt on the rape charge, 7NEWS reported.

The false imprisonment charge is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $1,000.

Also unsealed was Judge Russell Granger's order allowing Bryant to leave Colorado on July 4, about a half-hour after he surrendered to authorities. Bryant remains free on $25,000 bond.

In total, the 10 documents that were released were fairly benign and did not drop any type of bombshell, 7NEWS reported.

In one bonding document, there's an "X" where Bryant's signature would be.

Another document says police obtained samples of physical evidence from Bryant, including his clothing. Specific types of evidence were not listed, but Denver criminal defense attorney Dan Recht said it could include blood, pubic hair or genetic material.

"This is very routine, it happens in most sexual assault cases," Recht said. "Frankly, given that he is admitting that he had intercourse with her, it's pretty meaningless."

Earlier this week, media organizations filed notice that they will appeal Judge Frederick Gannett's order to withhold from the public most of the detailed court records in the case -- records which could list what evidence the prosecution has and why it believes the sex was forced instead of consensual.

Prosecutors have said they will not appeal Gannett's order. Bryant's attorneys have not indicated their plans.
