Farmer ‘Pushed Off’ Land For Heaven Fest.

Longmont Man Loses Lease To Christian Music Event

A Longmont farmer said he was pushed off the land he has farmed for years so Heaven Fest could take over for the weekend.

Now, he’s worried the damage can’t be undone.

”It’s just taking what I like to do and destroying it,” said Jim Wild, who has been watching his grass get trampled. “You can’t quantify the time I’ve put in there. It’s full-time job.”

Wild has cut and baled hay from the 59-acre site for four years, leasing the land from the city of Longmont.

Enter Heaven Fest.

“Heaven Fest is 70 bands and seven stages in one day,” said Dave Powers, president of Worship and the Word, Heaven Fest’s organizer.

The event is expected to draw more than 30,000 people and bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to Longmont, so the city said it terminated Wild’s lease and turned over the land to God for a few days.

City officials said the contract with Heaven Fest includes costs for remediating the fields afterward and paying Wilds for lost crops.

“It’s not a perfect situation,” said Dale Rademacher, Longmont’s Public Works director. “From a growing grass perspective, would it be better if you and I were not standing here right now? Sure. But, you know, that’s what the city is trying to balance.”

And while Heaven Fest officials said they are praying the grass will bounce back, Wilds fears that may take a miracle, especially if the event is successful and becomes an annual affair.

“I think that there are venues built for this type of event, and they shouldn’t take agricultural land out of production for a concert,” said Wilds.

Heaven Fest gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday at Union Reservoir, and the music goes from noon to midnight.

Tickets are $35, or whatever you can afford to pay.
