DENVER -- The Denver Five Points community held a rally Thursday night in support of the 84-year-old matriarch they call "Momma" after she was arrested last week, accused of receiving stolen goods. For 40 years, Zona Moore has operated Zona's Tamales restaurant on the corner of East 26th Avenue and Welton Street.According to court documents, an employee of Zona's Tamales and Zona's son either sold or facilitated the sale of crack cocaine from the restaurant window.
Denver police said they had warned Zona, fearful that the complaints they were receiving were from a disgruntled employee or upset neighbors."So in fairness to Zona we met with her and representatives and shared with them this unfortunate information we had received," said Denver police Cmdr. Tony Lopez. But when the complaints kept coming police set up a sting operation and said they obtained proof Zona was buying stolen goods. But she denies buying stolen cigarettes or stolen televisions."Not me, not me. I ain't seen no TV. I ain't touch no TV, that was done out there," Zona said.Zona, her 68-year-old son Saalim Muhammed, and another employee, Renee McKinnon, have been charged with theft by receiving.Zona said her son may be involved but she's not."Yeah, he was (involved.) He told them. He said, "My momma ain't done nothing.'"Zona said she believes that someone is trying to frame her."I have seen a lots, but I never thought I would be the one they would target down here," she said.Children were among the dozens of people waving signs at Thursday night's rally, which was held to to raise money to help Zona hire a lawyer. Some residents in the historically black neighborhood said they feel that the sting was about getting Zona to leave the corner so it can be redeveloped."I feel very confident that the evidence we have will show she is culpable for illegal and unfortunately unlawful acts," Lopez said.
