University Of Colorado Raises Over $140 Million

University Reports Increase In Donations

The University of Colorado has received $140.8 million in private support over the past fiscal year, capping the school's strongest-ever four years for such donations.

The private contributions for the fiscal year that ended June 30 represent a 4.7 percent increase from the 2008-09 school year. The funds include $92 million given through the University of Colorado Foundation, the school's fundraising arm. Nearly $49 million was given directly to CU, including gifts in kind.

The poor economy caused a decline in donations above $1 million as well as donations from foundations.

The university has also seen an increase in estate commitments, topping $25 million. This marked a 700 percent increase in this type of donation since 2008-09. The numbers are not included in the total amount of donations because these donations are not realized until the donors pass away. Fundraisers say this sort of donation demonstrates the loyalty of CU alumni.

CU President Bruce Benson says the private support adds significant value to the school. However, Benson says over 98 percent of the money is targeted to specific people, programs and infrastructure and can't be used to replace declining state funds. The donated funds are being used on projects ranging from the biotechnology building construction to Alzheimer’s research.

Colorado State University in Fort Collins reported an increase in donations of 6.6 percent.
