19 Trees Damaged

Vandals damaged more than a dozen trees at a new park in Fort Collins this week.

"Nineteen trees in all were vandalized," Fort Collins police spokeswoman Rita Davis told 7NEWS.

Davis said the vandals hit sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday night and 6 a.m. Wednesday morning at Spring Canyon Community Park in southwest Fort Collins.

The vandals hacked into the trees using a sharp tool like an ax, then used their body weight to snap the trees, according to Assistant City Forester Ralph Zentz.

Zentz said the trees-- ash, oak and honey locust-- were really starting to take off this year.

Spring Canyon Park is at the west end of Horsetooth Road between Taft Hill Road and Overland Trail. The park's website said, "Only in Spring Canyon will you find Colorado’s first universally accessible playground, a 2-acre dog park complete with a lake for our doggie paddling pals and a free ride course for endless mountain biking fun."

Zentz said replacing the trees would cost about $500 each, if the city had the money, which it likely doesn't. Zentz told 7NEWS several people and local nurseries have offered to help pay for the new trees.

Davis said the Police Department doesn't have any leads right now on who damaged the trees.
