BOULDER, Colo. -- After being closed for 16 months, the trail to Boulder Falls will reopen next week. The trail was closed in March 2009 after a woman was hit by falling rocks. Since then, visitors have only been able to get a glimpse of the falls from Highway 119 in Boulder Canyon. The short trail to the falls was blocked off.Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) said it will reopen the Boulder Falls trail on Aug. 2.
The slope above the trail has been professionally scaled to remove loose rocks above the trail, according to a news release.Officials said although precautions have been taken to reduce the potential for falling rocks, visitors to Boulder Falls should remain cautious and alert for changing conditions and natural hazards. The trail will close again Nov. 1 and stay closed each year from Nov. 1 to May 1 because ice and snow on the trail create slippery conditions, according to OSMP. During that time, officials said more scaling will be done to remove rocks loosened over the winter months. The city of Boulder's website said Boulder Falls is sometimes referred to as the "Yosemite of Boulder Canyon."Boulder Falls is 11 miles west of Boulder on the north side of Canyon Boulevard (SR119) between Boulder and Nederland.
