Fire investigators in Colorado Springs said Monday it was careless smoking that damaged 13 apartments in Colorado Springs this weekend.

The fire started about 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the Colony Hills Apartments.

There were heavy flames on the outside of the building when firefighters arrived.

"I saw flames coming out of the top apartment building," resident Alisa Reyes told KRDO-TV. "Once they put that out, the fire again started on the outside of the apartment."

Fire investigators ruled Monday the cause of the fire was accidental.

A total of 13 apartments were damaged, three had heavy fire damage, 10 others sustained smoke damage, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Firefighters said the exterior of the building was heavily damaged from fire.

Three residents and one firefighter were hurt.
