Dad Who Bit, Suffocated Baby Gets 40 Years
Koller's 7-Week-Old Son Died In 2009

DENVER -- A father who bit, shook and suffocated his infant son was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison.Benjamin Koller was originally charged with first-degree murder but he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child abuse resulting in death.His seven-week-old son was taken to the hospital a year ago with a skull fracture, bruises, bite marks and scratches. Doctors said the infant had widespread brain damage.
He died four months later.Koller wept at his sentencing during a slideshow of his son, Jack.The baby's mother, Jennifer Schmidt, wasn't charged in her son's death.Koller faced a maximum of 48 years in prison.
