McInnis Campaign Staffers Resign Over Plagiarism Flap
Source: Turning Point Was Rolly Fischer Interview
POSTED: 7:18 pm MDT July 16, 2010
DENVER -- Three members of Scott McInnis' gubernatorial campaign team have resigned, 7NEWS learned late Friday afternoon.CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia reported that Policy director Mac Zimmerman and political field director Dustin Zvonek have resigned. Another senior staffer is also leaving to take a key position on another campaign.Sources close to the campaign say these three, and several others, can no longer defend Scott McInnis' actions after he tried to get 82-year old Rolly Fischer to take the fall for McInnis' mistakes.
A knowledgeable source told Ferrugia that staffers feel betrayed by the man they trusted."The turning point in the campaign was the interview with Rolly Fischer," the source said. "Jaws dropped. They couldn't believe Scott tried to pin it on him … It was game, set, match. It was a crusher.""Nothing is going in the right direction," another source told Ferrugia. "The goal now is just to get (McInnis) through the primary because we know Dan Maes will not drop out … and we know he can't win."However, sources knowledgeable about the inner workings of the campaign cautioned that if McInnis wins the primary, he could take that as a sign of vindication."There will be a concerted effort to drag him across the line and then for the sake of the party, to isolate him and hope he does what is right for the party," a source told Ferrugia."Be clear," said Ferrugia. "These are all people who know and have supported Scott McInnis and the Republican Party. They desperately want to win the election for governor. And, they say there is no way McInnis can win against John Hickenlooper."
