EDGEWATER, Colo. -- Agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation have joined local officers to search an Edgewater home, looking for clues to the disappearance of a missing woman and mother of two. The move came as the Jefferson County District Attorney said he would present the case to a grand jury.
Heather Jean Dewild, 30 (pictured, left), was last seen one week ago.
Investigators obtained a warrant to search the home that she once shared with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Daniel Dewild. Investigators ended the search late Wednesday night and continued Thursday. At one point during the search Wednesday, police led a bloodhound through the house. Crime scene tape still surrounds the home on the 2000 block of Fenton Street and a blue evidence tent still sits in the front yard, 7NEWS reported.A second search warrant was issued Thursday afternoon, but the contents of it were sealed and it was not known where it would be served.Daniel Dewild has not been named a suspect in his estranged wife's disappearance, but officers said that this was the next logical step in the investigation.Police are treating the disappearance as a missing person's case but haven't ruled other possibilities. District Attorney Dave Thomas has asked the Jefferson County Grand Jury to look into the case. The panel can subpoena witnesses to testify, if needed. Her family and authorities are calling her disappearance suspicious because she left her two children -- a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy -- behind. Her family does not believe she left on her own, saying she was about to start a new life and was days away from finalizing her divorce. Her parents said that Heather and the kids have been staying with them ever since she filed for divorce in February.Heather Dewild was to start a new job as a ticket agent with United Airlines earlier this week but she disappeared on July 24.
Her white, four-door 1996 Nissan Sentra, with Colorado plate GBI-6568, is also missing.Daniel Dewild told police he met her at a McDonald's last Thursday, where she dropped the kids off and told him that she needed to run an errand. He said she never came back. He has since been fully cooperative with police.Dave Springer, her father, said Heather went to see Daniel because she wanted to talk about a small check he had received in both of their names and to pick up health insurance forms for the children. Springer said the couple usually met at public places whenever they discussed the children. The two children told their grandparents they ate at McDonald's, then went to their father's home and began playing in the back yard. "They say Mommy left, but what does that mean?" Springer said. "Did they see her leave?"Her parents said Heather had no money and there has been no activity involving her bank account since she disappeared. They have been passing out fliers to try and get any information that might lead them to their daughter. Springer is a Denver police technician and was at the search site Wednesday night.Heather Dewild is described as petite, about 4 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 98 pounds. She has sandy blond hair and blue eyes.If you have any information regarding her disappearance, you are asked to call Edgewater police at (303) 278-2000 or Denver police at (720) 913-2000.
