Better To Repair Or Replace Car After Hail Damage?

Check Insurance Coverage; Comprehensive Best

At 500 auto claims alone, Wednesday’s hailstorm in Adams County is already catastrophic for one insurance company.

State Farm has extra resources on the ground in Commerce City and will open up drive-in estimate locations in Brighton and Pueblo on Monday.

“We have to make an economic choice about what is the best thing? Is it better to pay you for the value of the vehicle? Or is it better to repair the vehicle?” said Bonnie Mattox, State Farm catastrophe team manager. “(It's) cost of repair versus value of the vehicle.”

Mattox said on top of the auto repair claims there are also 500 home repair claims made by Friday morning. She anticipates even more next week.

“If it takes us months, we’ll do it (look at them all). But it looks like the storm –- as far as numbers –- aren’t that high and we’re going to be able to get to them fairly quickly,” Mattox said.

At Supreme Carstar Auto Body at 5909 N. Quebec St.,hail damage estimates were being scheduled a week and a half out, while Auto Works paintless dent repairs were already underway, for an average of $4,000 to $7,000.

“I thought it wouldn’t be that much. (Of) Course I’ve never had a car worked on either,” said Debbie Patterson, owner of a damaged 2008 Hyundai Accent which needs $3,500 in repairs. “It better be worth more than that.”

The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association recommends comprehensive coverage for your vehicle, which covers hail and other damage beyond a typical car accident.

“Most of them know. Colorado’s a hail prone area,” Mattox said.

RMIAA estimates 80 % of Colorado drivers carry the optional policy.
