Report: Bryant Deceived Investigators About Alleged Rape
7NEWS Investigates, ABC News Conduct Joint Investigation
UPDATED: 10:31 a.m. MDT August 1, 2003
DENVER -- A joint investigative effort between ABC News and 7NEWS Investigates has shed new light on the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case.
Sources say that Bryant initially deceived law enforcement and provided inconsistent statements, according to the two news organizations.
"The defense will clearly argue the Bill Clinton precedent: a married man lies about an infidelity -- that doesn't mean it was rape -- that's what married men do," said Craig Silverman, 7NEWS legal analyst.
After conducting several interviews with sources, 7NEWS Investigates and ABC News said there is a better understanding of just what may have happened on June 30 inside the exclusive Cordillera Lodge and Spa in Edwards, Colo.
According to 7NEWS Investigates and ABC News, sources say that Bryant met the alleged victim when she gave him a tour of the lodge and spa. The Los Angeles Lakers star reportedly asked her if she would like to come up to his room later that evening and she agreed, 7NEWS Investigates and ABC News reported.
Sometime later, Bryant called the front desk and asked for the woman and she then went up to his room, according to the two news organizations. They reported that, contrary to many published reports, the woman did not bring Bryant an after-hours room service order.
7NEWS Investigates and ABC News also reported that sources say she was in the room for less than 30 minutes and that there was some consensual sexual activity, but the intercourse was not consenual.
The alleged victim sustained some physical injuries which the prosecution will say are indicative of non-consensual sex, 7NEWS Investigates and ABC News reported.
Sources also told 7NEWS Investigates and ABC News that there were no eyewitnesses to the alleged assault.
