Police: Homeowner Shoots, Kills Teen Intruder

Sound Of Breaking Glass Alerted Homeowner To Break-In

A Denver man who confronted several people who were breaking into his home early Monday morning shot and killed a teenager, police said. The victim was shot multiple times in the head.

Police were already in the neighborhood when the shooting occurred at 2:20 a.m.

Denver police officers were investigating a burglary call in the 3100 block of Gaylord Street when they heard gunshots about a block away, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

The homeowner at Gaylord Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard told police he heard glass breaking upstairs and when he went to investigate he found several intruders.

One intruder appeared to have a weapon, the homeowner said.

The homeowner said he told the intruder to drop the weapon but instead the intruder pointed it at the homeowner, according to an investigator.

The homeowner opened fire, killing one of the burglars. The other two intruders fled.

Marcus Duran, 17, died in the shooting. The Denver coroner's office said he died from multiple gunshot wounds in the head.

"When I found out [the homeowner was involved] I was like 'oh no'," said Larry James, a neighbor. "It kind of shook me up."

A 17-year-old arrested in connection with the incident was held for investigation of first-degree burglary. Denver Police were working to identify the third suspect believed involved in the burglary.

The homeowner was released pending the completion of the investigation and the presentation of the case to the District Attorney’s Office for their review. Colorado's "Make My Day" law, allows people to use deadly force in self-defense in their home against intruders if they believe their lives are in danger.

The woman who first called 911 told police that someone tried to break in through a window but her alarm may have scared them away.

It's not clear if the two break-ins are connected.

"The situation is currently being investigated as a homicide," Jackson said.

The house where the shooting occurred is currently up for sale. It was put on the market several months ago.

Neighbors are on edge after learning about the two break-ins and fatal shooting. They are warning others to take extra precautions.

"Make sure all your windows are closed," said Annie Mayfield. "Make sure you get your alarm turned back on."

"It's just shocking all the way around. You just never know, it could be anybody. You never can be too safe," said Willie Mayfield.
