Police: Arrested Psychic Meditated With Victims' Money

Lafayette Woman Accused Of Taking $179,000 From One Victim

UPDATED: 7:19 pm MDT May 13, 2010

You'd think a Lafayette "psychic" would have seen it coming, but Nancy D. Marks was arrested Tuesday as part of a fraud investigation involving the theft of more than $200,000 from two customers.

Police said they served an arrest warrant and search warrant on Marks at 492 W. Spaulding St., following a lengthy investigation.

Marks was identified as the owner and operator of Psychic Reading at 707 S. Public Road in Lafayette.

She was held for investigation of two counts of theft over $20,000 and criminal impersonation. Police investigators said they eventually determined that a psychic using various names was actually one woman -- Marks.

Detectives began investigating Marks' activities after receiving several complaints of fraud. The victims told police they gave a psychic at the South Public Road address large sums of money for psychic readings and other psychic services.

One of the victims told police she had given the psychic at Psychic Reading as much as $179,000, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by 7NEWS. The woman told police the psychic identified herself as "Linda."

The psychic told the woman, identified as "Susan," that she had too many "sixes" in her accounts and the woman had to provide Linda with account numbers for all of her bank accounts, investments and life insurance policies, according to the arrest affidavit.

Susan told police she eventually emptied out her retirement and savings accounts, and also charged up her credit cards in order to give Linda money.

Susan asked Linda why she wasn't getting her money back more quickly and Linda told her the money had to "suffer" so she would not have to suffer, the affidavit stated. Linda told the woman it needed to happen to draw the "darkness" out of her life so she could be happy in the future.

Linda told her that she would get every penny back, the affidavit stated. The psychic said the rest of the money was being "held in a safe at Mother Cabrini," according to the arrest affidavit.

The victim told police that Linda eventually returned $3,850 of her money but she was now looking into filing for bankruptcy because of her financial situation.

A male victim told police investigators that he visited a psychic who identified herself as "Mrs. Gable" at the Psychic Reading location on South Public Road.

He said Mrs. Gable said she based everything on numbers and colors and that she asked for his credit cards, telling him anything with the number six in it is bad.

The man said the psychic told him money was evil and not good, according to an arrest affidavit.

The psychic told the man to get $4,000 and give it to her so she could "draw out the bad energy," the arrest affidavit stated. The man said he was told the psychic would meditate with his money.

The man then obtained a $4,100 installment loan and gave the psychic $3,000, police said. The man said he eventually gave the woman nearly $35,000 in installments, all from cash advances on his credit cards.

During the investigation, police obtained information from investigators in Arkansas, where a woman named Nancy D. Marks had several arrest warrants.

When Lafayette officers contacted a woman at the psychic business address she identified herself as Dorothy Marks. However, the photo ID for Nancy Marks matched the woman who called herself "Dorothy Marks."

Police are trying to identify other potential victims in the case and have asked anyone who may have been a victim to contact Detective Sgt. Brian Rosipaila at 303-665-5571.

Marks is being held on a $250,000 bond.
