Bears Enjoy Weather In Boulder Tree

DOW Warns Against Attracting Bears

Two black bears were enjoying the warm weather Tuesday, hanging out and sleeping in the same tree in the Palo Park neighborhood in north Boulder.

A Colorado Division of Wildlife officer said the two were a mother bear and her cub.

The resting bears caused quite a stir in the neighborhood, as residents turned out to take photos and gawk. The bear seemed settled in, apparently oblivious to the stir they caused.

"I don't know, it's pretty cool because, I don't know, it's like the first time I've seen a bear," said 12-year-old Cara Keyser. "Besides the Zoo."

Keyser captured home video of the bears walking around her backyard and then climbing one of the trees.

"It's just really cool that they're in my backyard, like me of all people," said Keyser. "I just think it's amazing that bears are in my backyard, like usually you see them up in the mountains, like in the wilderness and stuff."

"Especially me, from Brazil, I've never seen a bear walking in a tree. For me it's very exciting," said resident Jose Ponciano. "It's a beautiful animal. It's amazing, but a little scary."

Wildlife personnel hope to get the bears out of the neighborhood and into a less-populated area, but want the bears to leave on their own. If the bears haven't come out of the tree by Thursday morning, DOW workers will re-evaluate the situation.

If the bears have to be tranquilized and moved, they'll be euthanized if they're caught in town again.

The DOW said the bears are probably hungry after hibernating. Bear-sightings in the foothills are a typical sign of spring.

A DOW volunteer handed out information that reminded residents how to keep from attracting bears, such as not putting birdseed out.
