Victim Loses Fingertip Struggling To Keep Gadget

Police are searching for a robber who nabbed a man's brand new iPad and part of his pinky finger along with it.

The theft occurred last week, outside the Apple store at the Cherry Creek Mall.

William R. Jordan, 59, purchased the iPad at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday. As Jordan walked out toward the exit doors, near the parking garage, a tall black man rushed up from behind and grabbed the shopping bag containing the iPad, a police report said.

"(Jordan) said he had the handle from the bag wrapped around his left hand and he was holding on tight," the report said.

As the thief yanked the bag, the bag's strings pulled the flesh off of the bone on his left pinky finger, Jordan told TheDenverChannel.

The robber ran back into the mall and exited through a south door, Jackson said.

Jordan, who is left-handed, went into shock and was transported to Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital with serious injuries.

Jordan said doctors had to amputate more than half the finger because he had lost so much tissue.

On Tuesday, Jordan talked to 7NEWS about his injuries.

"The time that I dreaded most is when they took the bandages off this morning, and that's when you have a sense of dread and repulsion," he said. "You look at it and say 'My God, how did this happen? Why did this happen?'"

A still image from a mall security video showed the suspect crouching as he rushed through the mall doors.

The suspect wore glasses and was clad in a dark shirt and pants and had a black shoulder bag with a white strap. Jordan said the robber was about 6-foot-2 and in his mid-20s.

Jordan said he had bought the iPad for a friend in Canada, where it is not yet available to the public. He hasn't had a chance to tell his friend what happened yet.

He said he worries about the man who attacked him.

"If he'll do this what else will he do?"

Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $2,000 for information identifying the robber. People can anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
