Cyclist Hit By RTD Bus Dies

RTD: All Drivers To Undergo Safety Refresher Course

A 42-year-old bicyclist died Wednesday after he was hit by an RTD bus in Lafayette on Tuesday night.

Police said the bus hit Marvin "Chip" Webb at the intersection of City Center Circle and South Public Road, at the entrance to an RTD Park & Ride, around 9:45 p.m Tuesday.

Webb, from Lafayette, was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition.

It is the third fatal accident since the weekend for RTD buses.

"This is an operator that's been with us for many years. (He) Has a good record and he was very, very upset about this. He did not see the bicyclist," said RTD spokesman Scott Reed. "The accidents do not seem to be related in any way. They've all been very different types of accidents but it’s something we're taking a very close look at. But clearly this has been a bad streak here. (It's) Something that’s extremely unusual. I've been doing this for almost 20 years and I've never seen anything like this."

Reed said all light rail and bus operators will undergo a mandatory, safety refresher course starting next week.

Webb ran Chip's Place, just a few short blocks away from the accident scene.

"You know, he's just letting people borrow when they need it and he just seems to be there, you know. He's a pretty good guy," said Cathy Montion, one of Webb's employees.

The restaurant was closed Wednesday but Montion said it would re-open Thursday morning at 5:30 to give customers a place to grieve.

Friends said Webb often rode his bike home.

"That is not an accident location in the City of Lafayette that has caused us a significant area of concern or problems," said Cmdr. Mark Battersby, with the Lafayette police department.

Battersby believed the investigation could stretch through the end of the week, given the other two fatal bus crashes, also involving RTD since Saturday.

"It doesn't influence the investigation but we will make sure that our investigation is as complete as possible, as detailed as possible to give everybody in this situation a fair shake," Battersby said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how Webb was hit.

The accident occurred about 12 blocks south of Chip's Cafe, located at 103 N. Public Road.

This is the third time this week an RTD bus has been involved in a crash.

Saturday, police said a bus ran a red light and collided with a car in Denver killing two people. Charges are pending against the bus driver.

Monday, a 78-year-old pedestrian was hit and dragged by a bus in Aurora. The man later died of his injuries at the hospital.
