LOVELAND, Colo. -- Two people were killed in a head-on collision Tuesday after a 17-year-old drove the wrong way down a busy road west of Loveland, authorities said.
Jarrod Johnson was driving south in the northbound lane of Taft Road, just north of 57th Street, when he hit a minivan driven by David J. Schultz, a 31-year-old father of three. The men, both from Loveland, died at the scene, Russell Zeller of the Colorado State Patrol said.
Johnson was alone in his sedan.
Schultz's wife, Misty, was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins with cuts and bruises. She was listed in fair condition, a nursing supervisor said.
Their three children, ages 3, 7 and 9, were listed in fair condition at the same hospital. The oldest suffered a concussion, the middle child had minor bumps and bruises and the youngest had a broken leg, Zeller said.
The accident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. west on a heavily traveled, two-lane road, Zeller said.
Investigators said they do not know why Johnson was on the wrong side of the road, but do not believe alcohol was involved. He was not wearing his seat belt.
Other vehicles ahead of Schultz's minivan avoided Johnson's car by veering into the shoulder before the accident.
