Aspen Highlands Bowl Ski Lift Breaks Down
Skiers Forced To Hike Out Of Back Bowl
POSTED: 8:10 am MDT March 22, 2010
Aspen Skiing Co. says overheating caused a ski lift at Aspen Highlands to break down over the weekend. Spokesman Jeff Hanle said several hundred people had to hike out from the Highland Bowl after the Deep Temerity lift broke down Saturday. Hanle said the lift suffered an electrical problem, and a back-up diesel engine system overheated. The lift is the only one at the bottom of the double black diamond Highland Bowl, and there is no way to ski out within the ski area boundary. Click here for a trail map.
Some riders were on the stalled lift for about 30 minutes. Others in line for the lift hiked out. Customers who were affected received vouchers good for $10 to $25 off items including food at the resort. The lift was closed while crews completed repairs Sunday.
