Health Care Reform Could Have Political Consequences

Voters Say Health Care Vote Will Impact November Elections

POSTED: 5:24 pm MDT March 21, 2010

As congressional leaders prepare to vote on health care reform, for some, their jobs are on the line.

Some voters in the Colorado's 4th District told 7NEWS that they would be watching Rep. Betsy Markey's, D-Colo., vote closely.

"I want her to vote for it. Absolutely I want her to vote for it," said Mary Corbett.

"I want a vote against this bill," said Andrea Maples.

The two views represent Markey's tough decision. She's a freshman Democrat, in a typically conservative district. Her decision to vote in favor of the health care reform has stirred a strong response from her constituents, especially those who don't like it.

"I think quite frankly, her decision to support the bill has sealed her fate in November," said Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway.

Conway said he and the other Weld County Commissioners felt compelled to write a letter to Markey voicing their disapproval of the legislation. Conway said if she votes for the bill, she'll lose his vote for her.

"No, I will not vote for her, nor will I think the vast majority of citizens in Weld County," Conway said.

"I don't think Congresswoman Markey's vote either way will make the difference," said former Sen. Hank Brown.

Brown told 7NEWS even if Markey voted "no" on the bill, she'd have a tough time keeping her seat.

"It's very clear she's a liberal Democrat who stands up for what she believes," said Brown.

Brown, a Republican, admits Markey's "yes" vote could be most beneficial to her and her party.

"President Obama will get a surge of support because it's a victory," Brown said.

Markey has said her vote isn't about politics. "This is about bringing down health care costs and doing what's right for the people of Colorado," she said.

Ultimately, political experts said it's not what happens today or tomorrow. It's what happens between now and November that will be most crucial for incumbent candidates, Democrats and Republicans alike.
