Denver Mother Sentenced To 20 Years For Son's Death

POSTED: 4:16 pm MDT March 19, 2010

A Denver woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her 2-year-old son's scalding death.

Twenty-four-year-old Isela Reyes-Talamantes was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in January to child abuse resulting in death. She originally was charged with first-degree murder, but the charge was dismissed in exchange for her plea.

Prosecutors said Elijah Archuleta died shortly after being taken to a hospital November 2008 with severe burns on 75 percent of his body. They said Reyes-Talamantes and her boyfriend drove around running errands while Elijah suffered in the back seat.

Archuleta had burns over 75 percent of his body, but he wasn't brought to the hospital until 10 hours after he was injured, according to a probable cause statement from Denver police. The statement also said Elijah had a black eye, in addition to severe burns, when doctors saw him.

Reyes-Talamantes' boyfriend, John Vigil, also faces trial for first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in the case.
